Overview

The Heuchera Garden lies on the northeast corner of the Dane County Extension office building.  This garden area has a range of light conditions:  part shade under the Betula nigra (river birch) and Malus (ornamental crab) and full sun in the east corner.  Over one-third (50) of the garden plantings are spring blooming, including 10 spring blooming trees and shrubs. Heucheras were selected for display throughout this garden since they grow in both sun and part shade locations and offer beautiful, evergreen foliage in a dramatic color range, in addition to attractive flowers.

Heuchera Garden Team

Team members learn about plants that thrive under a variety of moisture and light conditions, and become familiar with a variety of heuchera cultivars.  Team members learn about:

-          heuchera cultivars that thrive in a Madison WI climate, and which varieties do well in full sun vs. part to full shade.
-          proper division and transplanting of heucheras and other perennials (timing and techniques)
-          flowering shrubs for all seasons
-          techniques for pruning trees and shrubs
